Interview with Independent Jewelry Designer Allison Biggs, Owner of Midnight Firefly (originally published in 2004) DivaTribe: How long have you been doing what you’re currently doing?
Allison Biggs: Well, Midnight Firefly has been open since November of 2003. I’ve always considered myself an artistic person. My art has just taken many forms over the years.
DT: How did you get started professionally?
AB: It all started when I opened up a bead catalog. There were so many different colors and shapes; infinite possibilities for new creations. With a background in graphic design and fine art, I was instantly drawn to jewelry making. After all, jewelry design consists of the same basic principals of any other kind of art. You are bringing together basic elements to create something that is completely unique.
After graduating college with my degree in graphic design, I realized how hard it was to get a career in my field. I figured that there was no better time than the present if I was going to pursue the idea of having my own small business.
DT: Do you do this full-time, or do you have other full- or part-time employment?
AB: Midnight Firefly is only a
part time deal for me. I work in the display department of a retail
store full time. It’s actually a lot like having two full time jobs.
DT: What’s the most satisfying part of your business?
AB: I would have to say the
most satisfying part of the whole thing is other people’s reactions. I
love getting orders or going to fairs and hearing peoples positive
comments. I think it’s the ultimate compliment as an artist to know
that other people ‘get’ your work.
DT: What did you have to learn the hard way?
AB: Patience. Success doesn’t
happen overnight. When I started, I expected orders right off the
bat. Having a small business is a huge investment in time and money.
I’ve learned to be satisfied with my work as a creative outlet, and be
hopefully optimistic for financial success. No one ever starts the
journey of success at the top.
DT: What can we look forward to from you in the future?
AB: Starting out as a jewelry
designer I was very conservative and cautious with my designs until I
realized all the possibilities that are out there. As my earlier
pieces sell down, I would like to create things are more unique and
individual.
DT: Any parting words?
AB: If you are looking for what
you want to do with your life, never settle for anything less than what
you’re worth. Always do what you are inspired to do.
