Welcome to DivaTribe

A diva accepts herself as she is right now and strives to be even better.

The Shy Single coverThe Shy Single:  A Bold Guide to Dating for the Less-Than-Bold Dater
by Bonnie Jacobson, Ph.D., with Sandra J. Gordon

This book has a catchy title, and it starts off well, with an on-target description of the shy life and a neat little quiz to check your own shyness.  As a high-scoring shy single myself, I contemplated the suggestions with an eye toward practical application.

However, I quickly became frustrated with the New York upper-middle-class cast of shy singles used as examples:  "Caroline, an attractive, thirty-eight-year-old insurance executive," "Paul, a thirty-three year old marketing executive," "Michael, a thirty-five-year-old physician,"  "I met the guy I'm now dating at a bar in the Hamptons," - will this book be useful for real people like me?

Yes and no.  The technique of trying to review what has worked for you in the past, well that works best if you've had significant success in the past.  The suggestion to tell people up front that you're shy may make you
feel better, but does it make any difference?  The 'Seven Habits of the Socially Fit' were instructive even if they were a bit cliche.

Overall, this book reminds me of the Dove Girl ad - the part at the beginning where they say something like firming the thighs of a size 2 supermodel is not a challenge.  Teaching a beautiful wealthy New Yorker how to find a date just does not seem that difficult, shy or not.
