Whether you're preparing for a blizzard, an earthquake, a hurricane
or just like to be prepared, here are some suggestions for putting
together an emergency kit for your home.
First, get a large capacity Rubbermaid (or similar) container with
a lid that fits on securely. Using a plastic storage box will help
ensure that nothing inside gets wet.
Items to include:
-
Flashlight
-
Radio
-
Batteries for both of the above
-
First aid: bandages, gauze, rubbing alcohol,
tape, needle, scissors, first-aid handbook, Neosporin, antibacterial
spray
-
Aspirin, Tylenol
- Soap
- Toothbrushes and toothpaste
-
Canned food
- Crackers
-
Can opener
-
Plastic utensils
-
Bottled water
-
Heavy gloves
-
Towels
-
Thick socks
- Underwear
-
Blanket
- Candles and matches
These are some ideas to help you get started. use it as a guide
to create your own kit, taking your own family's needs into consideration
(infants, prescriptions, elderly, etc). Make sure to check your
kit once a year and replace anything that has gone beyond its
expiration date, including batteries. You might wish to tape important
phone numbers inside the lid of your box as well.
