About Susan...
Brackney graduated from Indiana University in 1994 with a B.A. with
distinction in English and a certificate in women's studies (which she
immediately put to good use as a furniture salesperson.) Brackney's
career as an independent artist and writer has been punctuated with odd
jobs: waitress, organic farm hand, library circulation desk clerk,
telemarketer, corporate suit.
After saving half of one year's income, Brackney started her own publishing company and self-published The Lost Soul Companion: A Book of Comfort and Constructive Advice for Black Sheep, Square Pegs, Struggling Artists, and Other Free Spirits. One year later a division
of Random House, Inc. purchased the rights to re-release The Lost Soul Companion (Dell Trade Paperback, September 2001). Its sequel, The Not-So-Lost Soul Companion: More Hope, Strength, and Strategies for Artists and Artists-at-Heart, is scheduled for release
in October of 2002.
About the Book...
The Lost Soul Companion Project
started as a little, self-published book and an accompanying website
devoted to the support of "lost souls" of every stripe. Since 1999,
hundred of artists, musicians, actors, writers, and generally free
spirits have gathered to discuss their creative projects, offer
encouragement and advice, rant, rave, and collaborate as needed on six
different Lost Soul Companion community forums.
Additionally, The Lost Soul Companion Project
features extensive resources for creative professionals, a free,
snail-mail pen pal program, a monthly newsletter, and an on-line
mail-art exhibit.
Future Plans...
Future plans include the creation of the Lost Soul Companion Open
Market, a virtual gallery for original art/music buyers and sellers to
'meet' and do business, and The Lost Soul Foundation, a non-profit
venture granting money to Lost Souls for emergency living expenses,
creative projects, community service, etc.
