Recipes: Stories, by Madeleine Thien
Ms. Thien has crafted a collection of short stories examining the sometimes
painful realities of relationships. She considers ties familiar to every
woman; bonds to one's Self, friends, family, and loves.
The Unspoken, the private undercurrent within every relationship, is
the primary focus of each story. Ms Thien artfully wields her understated
descriptions, revealing the truth of her character's lives. She quietly
peels back the public mask, leaving bare the actual meanings of awkward
silences, years of disappointment, or unspoken family secrets.
Simple
Recipes is both thoughtfully-written and thought-provoking.
The reader will be hard pressed not to find a familiar experience or
emotion in Ms. Thien's stories.
