Idiot Girls' Action Adventure ClubThe Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club, by Laurie Notaro

This is the first book by Phoenix writer, Laurie Notaro. I really enjoyed this compilation of satirical stories told from the life of the author. Once I got used to her humor I found myself sucked deep into this book and laughing along at all the antics. This book is told from the perspective of a girl growing up who didn't have all the breaks. If something went wrong it usually happened to her and if nothing went wrong it was her fault too.

The book jumps around telling small little anecdotes in no particular order as the author matures from a crazy teenager to struggling adult. From traveling around living on Taco Bell to the bush whacking fairies there isn't a story that doesn't amuse and amuse well. At times I had to re-read the author's bio just to make sure she came out of some situations unscathed. Laurie Notaro can take a normal situation and turn it into an enjoyable reading experience. If anyone has had to sit through a boring day of jury duty or wade through job ads they will be able to relate to this quirky author. Each story starts off with a catchy title making you wonder what the next chapter holds. I especially loved her touching and humorous stories about her grandparents. She pokes fun at them in a loving way that only a granddaughter could do.

Notaro is one of the more enjoyable black sheeps a family could have and I'm just another woman who would fit right into the Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club.

The Idiot Girls' Action Adventure Club is a fast paced read through the trials and tribulations of drinking, smoking, road trips and struggling to keep jobs. Complete with an overbearing family this book is sure to win your hearts.

From Library Journal
Notaro, who writes a weekly humor column for the Arizona Republic, has collected some of those columns into her first book. Notaro is "everywoman" ...

update 7/07/03:
Autobiography of a Fat Bride, the sequel to The Idiot Girls' Adventure Club, is finally released.
