My Tiara: How to Rule the World As a Smartmouth Goddess, by Susan Jane Gilman
I just finished
this book this morning (ah, the joys of insomnia!). I enjoyed it - it
was witty and smart and really points out the absurdities of womanhood.
We can probably find ourselves in much of what the author describes.
A lot of what she says is obvious, but somehow seeing it in print makes
one think more. For example, the ridiculousness of some of the womanly
rituals - wearing shoes we cannot walk in, carrying tons of stuff around
with us all the time (men understand the value of being able to get
around unencumbered) - things like that. This is the kind of book that
made me want to make some immediate changes in my life, but I will need
to reread parts of the book before it sinks in. The part about women
eating out and ordering French Fries was sooo on the money and was so
silly to read - yet it never seems that silly when it is happening.
The one message I got from the book that really hits home is the importance
of female friendships. I really don't have many friends - I have two
good friends at work but other than that and my sister and my mom, I
really don't have any friends. It is a gap in my life, without a doubt.
On the flip side, sometimes the book went a little too far. The author
really mocks the whole wedding day thing (even though I agree in many
respects) and also mocks shows like Wedding Story and Baby
Story - which I can completely understand, but I would have liked
more of an exploration of WHY women gravitate toward these shows (I
confess, I LOVE Dating Story and Makeover Story myself).
One must always be careful with these books as they are based on generalizations,
BUT, this author gets it right much of the time...
Happy Reading!!!
