Mudworks:
Creative Clay, Dough, and Modeling Experiences, by
MaryAnn Kohl
Review by Jennifer Thompson
I purchased
my copy of Mudworks
at the recommendation of a good friend who loves art and has three kids
of her own. I figured if she was suggesting the book then it was probably
going to be great. And it is!
Mudworks
is a book of simple recipes to make at home for play doh, modeling clay
and other such goodies. I love what Ms. Kohl has to say in her forward:
"Some
projects will be lovely to look at, some lovely to taste, and others
lovely to have explored and nothing more. Children will need only
to please themselves."
The book has
over 100 different recipes ranging from playdough to bread dough to
papier-mache and modeling mixtures. Each recipe has symbols and ages
assigned to it, to let parents know whether or not cooking is needed,
if the objects should be air dried, when caution is recommended and
the suggested appropriate ages for uising the mixtures. My daughter
is only two and we have already tried several of the play-doh type recipes.
Our favorite so far is actually the very first recipe: Salty Fundough.
(See pink box for recipe)
Each recipe
lists out the materials needed, gives step by step instructions and
suggests variations as appropriate. None of the recipes I've tried or
read so far requires any special ingredients or equipment, making the
recipes that much easier to dive into.
