Does anyone here have any good tips for someone (me) who has never used round needles before?  I\'ve gotten the impression that the length of the needles matters depending on the size of your project.  Also, how do you keep track of your first stitch so that everything stays the way it\'s supposed to as you go \'round and \'round?

Hmmm, round needles, you say?  I\'ve never heard of them.  You\'re not talking about Circular Needles, are you?  I\'ve attempted Circular needles before and had no patience for them!  The silicone that attatches the two needles together really bothered me, it kept getting tangled and driving me crazy.  I imagine you would use a stitch marker to keep track of stitch one.  All I have to say is good luck!  I\'ve been searching for a pattern to knit an infant hat, but all I\'ve come across is patterns that use those dreadful needles.

Jill - Do you crochet?  It\'s easy to crochet in rounds and there are tons of baby hat patterns for crocheting.

...the pattern instructions should specify which length...I have gotten so used to circular needles, I really don\'t pay attention to that anymore...I keep pulling a piece of the loop through the stitches that I\'m not working on ... rolleyes I know, one shouldn\'t really do that, but...it works for me! You can buy \"stitch markers\", but I think it\'s easier to just take a small bit of yarn of a different color and tie it as a little knot around the first stitch.

I\'ve used circular needles, but not for knitting in the round - I use them because that way I\'m less likely to accidentally slide a needle out and have to start all over.  eek

The length between the two \"needle\" ends should be adequate to support the number of stitches you want to create.  If you want to make a project that is 200 stitches wide, figure out your guage and then decide if the # of inches between the two needles is enough to hold that many stitches.

OK, that makes sense, gives me a lower bound for the length of the needles and gives me a new question - is there a similar upper bound for the length of the needles that we need to be concerned with?

Wish me luck - I invested in yarn, a pattern and some circular needles today.  I\'m heading out of town with DD tomorrow for about 6 days, and I\'ve got a hooded poncho to work on for her while we\'re gone.

Cross your fingers that I can get it all figured out!  bouncing lol

Well, I don\'t know what I was so intimidated about.  rotf  I made DD her poncho while we were out of town, and knitting on circular needles is a breeze!  I had four markers where I had to do decreases every so often, and it was as easy as could be.

My gauge, OTOH, was a bit of a mess, so  I had to resort to crocheting around the neck to get the thing to fit properly over her head.  :o At least I know how to crochet, lol!

Now that I can do this, my next challenge is double-pointed needles...
