We are leaving on a last minute family getaway! The boys go back to school the middle of next week, so we wanted to do something fun with them for a long end of Summer weekend.

We rented a log cabin a few hours south of here, in West Virginia, right along the Hatfield & McCoy Trails. We just bought 16 year old DS a used dirtbike, borrowed another from a friend, so now along our dirtbike & my ATV, all 4 of us have something to ride the historic trails on!

There is a ton of history in those woods - it's where the term "red neck" was coined - after the coal-miners, who wore red bandanas around their necks, rose up against the abusive mine owners and started the first Union. We are going to see some of the old mines, and there is a museum dedicated to the immigrant and native american history of the area in the huge national park.

I am so looking forward to a relaxing getaway with the family!  yippee

We had an awesome time! It was a family vacation we will always remember! The log cabin we rented was 5 star and the owners had thought of every detail to make it a wonderful place to stay.

We had a blast riding the trails! It got pretty hairy after we missed a sign and wound up on a trail rated "most difficult" when we intended to stay on the easiest rated trails. eek This was no problem for DH and 16 year old DS - both experienced trail riders with high powered dirt-bikes. It was a real challenge for me and 10 year old DS though, him riding a mini dirt-bike and me on an under powered 4 wheeler!

At one point 16 year old got too far ahead and scared us all 1/2 to death fearing he'd dumped the clutch and shot over the cliff. DH called the ranger station to have them search, and we took turns waiting with 10 year old DS, going different directions searching the trail.

In my panic  I over-rode my under-powered ATV to it's death! I blew 3 of the 4 gears in the transmission and overheated the engine, it started stalling and I would have to rock it back & forth to get it going again.

It turned out that DS had made it past a very difficult section on the trail that he didn't want to pass through again, so instead of coming back like he'd been doing, or stopping & waiting for us to catch up, he went ahead to the end and was in the parking lot!

The Ranger called us, and we were heading out when my ATV's engine overheated so bad that the Oil cap blew off and the engine caught fire!  eek I had to get towed in by the Ranger!

DS learned an important lesson about trail safety and will never make the same mistake again.

The owner of the cabin lent me a bigger ATV so after all of that we still got to enjoy another day on the trails - a fun filled day with no more rookie mistakes!  big grin
