Do any of you ever have them?

I am thinking of doing my first one sometime this spring.

I have so much "stuff" just accumulating around my house that I want to get rid of.

I also thought of selling stuff on Ebay but it seems like that could get really complicated with shipping and such?

eBay requires a certain investment of time to do it right, but if you have an item that is already selling well on eBay than it can be worth it.  Yard sales aren't going to bring in as much for any one item but it's an easy way to unload a bunch of stuff all in one day.  big grin  We have done both here.  When I was a SAHM I did a lot with eBay but now I wouldn't do it unless I knew the item in question was truly worth listing and would bring back a fair return for my effort.

I live on a fairly busy street.  We are going to do a two-house garage sale later this spring/summer to benefit the youth ballet company.  There are at least 6 or 7 families that live right around my neighborhood with kids dancing there, so it ought to be fairly easy to pull off.

Hi

I do not have yard sales but I absolutely love them.  Are you in NYC?  If so, and if I am not too late, please forward me some information.  I would love to come treasure hunting.

I have done both, with varying degrees of success.

Ebay is great for selling items that you may need to bigger market to get the price you want. I have had a lot of luck selling leftover parts from our auto shop as well as baby and kids stuff as my boys grew out of them.

We live in a large housing development, which is well known for our yearly neighborhood sale. We put ad's in the local papers, and post signs around town, and People come from all around. If the weather is good, it is a lot of fun and a great way to clean out the closets! One year we made $500! We were remodeling, and sol the old fixtures, a sink, toilet, and some other misc. house stuff - I was amazed at what people bought!

We usually wind up swapping some things with neighbors too! We got some great furniture one year from a neighbor who was downsizing to a smaller house that year.

We are getting ready for this years sale - next weekend! We have the boys go through their things, and they get to keep the proceeds of anything they sell.

I always set up a clothes rack, and surprisingly, sell a lot of my old clothes. Books and CD's are always big sellers too.

While it takes some time to get organized and set everything out, it can be a great way to de-clutter and make a few $ at the same time.

Unfortunately it is supposed to rain here on Saturday. I am trying to get DH to clean out our garage, and take his antique ca, trailer, and our motorcycles down to his shop so that I can set up in there. So far thats not looking very promising though!  dry

We;re doing a sale to benefit the ballet company next month, and I know that clothes racks would be a great addition.  It's so much easier to sell stuff that looks orderly and nice as opposed to digging through piles or boxes!

I'm not sure how many families ended up donating to our sale.  It was probably in the neighborhood of ten or so.  We didn't have a ton of big ticket stuff but still raised about $500!

Yard sales are a great way of getting $$$ from stuff you never use.  I have had a very bad experience with eBay.  Sold a Playstation 3 on eBay the first 3 days they were out.  I paid $499 for it and sold it for $804 in a 3 day auction. They were impossible to get at the time.

To make a long story short, I shipped the item which had never even been opened.  The purchaser filed a claim with eBay that it was missing a cable and the owner's manual and was not new as advertised which was a total lie.  They had only been out for 3 days and the box was never even opened.  I even insured it for $60 when I shipped it which I didn't even have to do. I had Sony mail him a new cable and owners manual even though I knew he received it.

2 months later after investigating, eBay said he owed me the money.  Then he filed a claim with PayPal.  3-4 months later PayPal too sided with me and said he owed me the money.  Then he filed a claim with his credit card company.  3 months later PayPal notified me that his credit card company sided with him because he said he'd tried to notify me and I wouldn't respond which was again a lie.

Needless to say I'll never sell anything on ebay again.  I'm out about $600 AND never got the unit back.  They guy is likely still playing my PS3 after years, and it didn't cost him a dime.
