After much dragging and delaying, we are finally back on track with our community development program! (my unit has this \"10%\" of our time committed to non-work related things, including community development...of course, it always ends up being far more than 10%!

)
This year, we have \"adopted\" a public school...read all about it in [link:www.Tacasdg.blankenstein.info|this link] ...so far, we have collected enough money to change the roof of the school and to fix the pipes and toilets...we will later try to raise some more to fix the electric wiring and to help set up a computer room (they have some machines, and a room available, but the wiring is bad and the room would need to be adequated to this use)...Once the computer room is set up, we would give them some computer lessons...basic stuff like Word, Excel, Power Point... We also want to build a small library (they have a piece of land available for that, too...just no $$ to build anything!)
In the meantime, we are going to give some of the 7th, 8th and 9th graders English lessons...We have a large enough pool of volunteers that each one of us would only have to teach once a month...and the kids would have classes 3 times a week!
I love this because we can really make a significant impact in their lives!! :laugh: We are starting lessons on the 16th! It\'s all so exciting!! (and, because classes would be from 6-7pm, I still would arrive home at the same time that I arrive from a normal working day, so I wouldn\'t even have to sacrifice my time with DD (anymore than I already do, I mean!)
I have always found teaching to be such an exciting activity!!...I\'ll keep you all updated!
