Real estate is the perfect industry for moms who don't want to clock into a cubicle every day, and it's high time we wrestled it away from the suits.

First of all, it's flexible, whether you enter on the real estate agent side, or the real estate investing side (or both, for that matter). You make your OWN schedule, not slave to someone else's, so you can work it around your kids, etc.

Second, it can be extremely lucrative, on part time hours.

Finally, who knows more about homes, houses, and real estate than a mom?

I'd start with the following articles & quick reads, they're free and easy to follow for beginners:
Real Estate & Property Management Articles Database
Real Estate & Rental Property Investing Blog
How to Screen Tenants - A Landlord's Guide
How to Protect Your Real Estate Assets - Landlord's Legal Basics
Real Estate Social Network: A Lighter Look at Real Estate
Good luck!

This is just my personal opinion, but I wouldn't run out and quit my job to pursue a career in real estate with the market the way it is today.

At least I know in my field (social work) there's always going to be work and a stable paycheck coming in.   I can probably even tweak my hours/schedule if need be (kinda do that already!).
