Welcome to DivaTribe

A diva accepts herself as she is right now and strives to be even better.
She doesn't change who she is to fit someone else's idea of what she ought to be.
She reaches for her own ideal sense of whom she wants to be.
She's strong; she's courageous; she's creative.

My Mother is in the hospital.

My Dad took her to the ER in the morning, after running some tests, they admitted her, but she told him not to call my sister or I - because she didn't want to "ruin plans" or "worry anyone."

I called my sister to see if I could borrow her gun to go to the shooting range. She says: "You know Mom is in the hospital - right?"  I had NO idea! So, I went rushing to the hospital.

She was laying in the hospital bed, her eyes closed, trying to sleep - but writhing in pain... It was really scary - I have never seen my Mom sick in a hospital bed before. She looked so weak, and old... I didn't want to wake her - but I did not want to scare the crap out of her if she opened her eyes and saw me lurking over her either.

Her Colon is infected, swollen, and not working right. They are feeding her through an IV - and she is not allowed even a sip of water. They are watching her overnight to see if the swelling goes down, otherwise she is facing major bowel reconstruction surgery.

I am scared to death at the idea of her having such major surgery because she smokes 2 packs of Marlboro Reds a day, is about 95 pounds over-weight, and has Diabetes.... None of those are a good mix with Anesthesia and major surgery....

My Dad, sister, and I all took off work to be there when the Dr. finally sees her tomorrow. I will keep you posted.

This week has been so hectic, I never had a chance to update you all!

After several days in the hospital on IV antibiotics, and a liquid diet, they sent her home.  She will likely need surgery to remove part of her Colon, but it is a much safer operation if they can wait until the infection is all cleared up. So, now she is supposed to take oral antibiotics, and go in for a Colonoscopy in 3 weeks.

They think she might have an allergy to Wheat protein, called Celiacs Disease, so until they do the Colonoscopy, she is on a very strict diet.

I will update when we find out more. Thank you everyone for your support!

Celiac Sprue is usually detectable via stool sample (pleasant thought, no? but at least it's not invasive), I'm surprised they didn't do that test while she was in the hospital. If that's the case a gluten free diet can be a PITA (wheat seems to be in practically everything these days) but it certainly beats lots of the alternatives.

Good luck and I hope things improve for her.
