This morning, I woke to the sound of my dog going Bananas, and some strange woman's voice saying "Hello? Hello?"  In a fog, still 1/2 asleep, and 1/2 blind w/out my contact lenses, I jumped out of bed, went running down the hall, looking down the stairs I could see the front door hanging open & the dog was gone...

From the window, I saw some crazy woman loading this Piece of junk, plastic, outdoor little kids picnic bench, in to her mini-van - from our garbage pile! I got it as an old hand me down - when 14 yr old DS was 2, it is at least 20 years old - and mold stained from sitting outside all of those years!

So, apparently this crazy woman who wanted that from our TRASH seriously opened our front door, hollered in to the house, let our dog out, and then left our front door hanging wide open!

DS went out on his bike to find the damn dog before he could bite someone (he has gone blind in one eye, and gets scared & snippy when people approach him)...

There was a freak parade - at least 5 different, strange groups of people, roaming our neighborhood, literally PICKING through people's TRASH! THen DS told me he had heard a noise in the middle of the night, looked out the window and saw some strange lady picking through the neighbors garbage.

I told DH to NEVER leave the door unlocked when he leaves for work in the morning again!

*** Edited to add***

The more I thought about it, the more it bothered me.... While the neighborhood we live in is middle class, the town in general is very affluent. Since I was a kid I can remember a group of "Gypsies" coming around running scams & robbing houses, every few summers. So, at my Mothers request, I called the police to tell them what happened. Apparently ours was not the only door opened, and the officer I spoke with feels that it could be the Gypsies, using the trash diving as an excuse to test peoples doors.  eek

At least the police are aware, and will be patrolling looking for out of place vehicles and people...

That's crazy!!! On a related note, there was a 10-12 year-old kid going door to door selling "candy" last night ALONE.  DH took a bike ride around the block and noticed some older men had "dropped him off" who were sitting in their car.  He got the license plate number just in case as we've read there's been some robberies in our neighborhood lately. When the kid came to our door he told my DH he had been in a neighborhood about an hour and a half a way the night before trying to sell candy which totally raised a red flag. I told him he needs to call the cops ASAP.

That is very scary!!!  Although, in a few neighborhoods I have lived in, it is very common to put out stuff for the local "dumpster divers" to pick up.  Your situation definitely crosses the line!  Seriously, make sure to check the locks at night!!!

Wow! That does sound fishy! It is totally messed up to use a little kid as a decoy or "scout" for robberies! Ugh! That is great your DH got that License plate # - hopefully, nothing will happen, but that could be very useful information if it is unfortunately needed.

Our neighborhood is a notoriously great place for "dumpster diving." We have taken things other people put out before -  DS and I go running in the evening on garbage night, and if we spot anything really good - we go back with the SUV to get it! Just last week, we found a nice, clean, love-seat for DS's room that the neighbors threw out because their dog gnawed on the matching couch & they bought all new matching furniture!

However, I have never bothered knocking on a door to ask... If it is set out for the trash, I'm sure the people do not care who takes it - as long as it is gone! Actually opening someone's door, walking in their house, and letting their dog loose to boot - is way beyond the scope of normal!

I emailed our good friend who is the Chief of Police in the township up the road, and has a mutual aid agreement with our township. He warned me that there have been a few burglaries in his patrol area, and scolded DH for leaving the door unlocked.

DH cut 2x4's to fit the sliding doors as an extra precaution, and I had a few extra keys made for the boys, now when we are at work, and they go ride their bikes, or go next door, they can keep the house locked up!

I guess I spoke too soon..........some teens/younger adults stole DH's bike out of the driveway the other night. He left it there for 2 seconds while he ran into the house to get something.........not a brand new bike or anything but still.  Our neighbor called the cops because he thought it was strange that some people who looked out of place were lurking around our neighborhood. DH even took off like a madman in his truck trying to hunt them down in the local park but no luck. I really think I want to install a security system.

Wow.  You be safe.  Alot of people have installed cameras at their homes.  I think its a good idea.  Especially if it gets worse.
