This is a great question, and it made me think it would be interesting to hear everybody's answers!

Totally off the subject, but how'd you get involved in your job Heather? I am looking to change fields, and research seems interesting to me (ie. social work related research stuff though).

I worked at a non-traditional University while I earned my degree at night.  I completed both a bachelor's and master's degree there, and I was able to move up the ranks from a part-time accounts payable assistant to the executive asst. to the Provost for that institution (over the course of the 9 years I worked there).  Once I got my MBA a contact from my job lead me to work at a traditional University.  When I made a job change last year I had the experience I needed to work at the research institution where I now work, but I also had a childhood friend who works here and let me know about the job, gave my name to the right person, etc.

I got into teaching in general through a program aimed at college senior math majors at UCLA.  I'd always enjoyed tutoring, so I decided to give teaching a try.

I wound up in my current job after sending DD to the school for a year and finding myself getting more and more involved with things.  One conversation led to another, and here I am.

What a great question!

my job quest has gone in a lot of different directions.
Following college I thought I'd be a writer, after working at a newspaper I realized that was not my parachute.
then I thought sales might be fun but I was horrible at it - almost, but not quite, as bad at it as I was waitressing Wink
Then I got involved in web design and realized it was such a passion, then I got involved in advertising and realized how much I love delving into the psychology of people and what makes them react.  Marketing was the next step for me and I now run a team of web developers and graphic artists so I can implement a lot of different marketing campaigns.  I LOVE my job. smile It's not always perfect but what I do is always so exciting and there is a world of learning open to me.

But I got lucky with a lot of different moves to different jobs and different bosses that saw natural talents in me to give me the opportunity to find all of this out!

Social work is something I felt like I always wanted to do since high school.  And I followed that path.

I am itching for a career change though, but I have no idea what else I could do!

I always loved writing, so I went into journalism in college. I also majored in psychology, because it was fun to understand how people thought. After college, I looked for whatever communications jobs were to be had in St. Louis, and I ended up with the Salvation Army, doing their publications and press. I LOVED working for such a rewarding organization. I stopped working there when I had my kids and moved out of state, but when we eventually moved to Texas and I was divorced and needed to get back into working, I started looking again and landed my current job doing -- what else? -- publications and press for a nonprofit. I love it! I can't imagine doing anything else. The perks might not be the same as a for-profit company, but the gratification is much better.
