Welcome to DivaTribe

A diva accepts herself as she is right now and strives to be even better.
She doesn't change who she is to fit someone else's idea of what she ought to be.
She reaches for her own ideal sense of whom she wants to be.
She's strong; she's courageous; she's creative.

Hi, so I am new to the tribe, but I just lost my job and am looking for a bit of community. I was laid off about three weeks ago, and I thought I could hop right back into something new... Well, that hasn't been the case. I feel like I am not completely adept at using computers etc. and when employers look at my resume, there is nothing on there to "Wow" them. I feel lame. Anyway, I have found a site, www.myinnerworld.com that helps with meditation and calming, but has anyone ever gone to a career coach? Does this help? I am in the need of someone to help me figure out my talents in the working world.

Welcome to DivaTribe. smile

I've never gone to any kind of coach (aside from soccer as a kid big grin) but I'm sure it could be helpful if you go formulate clear attainable goals with that person and they can actually help you achieve them.

Hi and welcome!  No career coach for me, but I do see a very effective psychologist who kinda fills that role for me.  big grin

hmmm...I'd say you probably have a lot of talents that you take for granted, so you haven't found a way to make them "shine" in your resume...

If you ask, I'd say I'm good at what I do....if you ask the people I've worked with, most will tell you I was great (and, honestly, other than a couple "bright" moments, I don't see it that way!)....

Welcome to the tribe, and hugs to you.   hug

I've had some career counseling, and done a lot of reading and self-testing.  Basically, they can help you on a journey of self-discovery, and when you know what you want they can point you in the right direction.

I bet that answering some of these questions for yourself (offline, these are private just for you) might help point you in the right direction:

1.  What type of work did you do before?
2.  Was it just a job or did you feel like it was a career?
3.  What job that you have had was your favorite and why?
4.  If money was not an issue, what would you want to do each day?
5.  What are your hobbies?  Can any of those become a career?

If you have not taken a Myers-Briggs personality Type Indicator (MBTI), I find it's fairly good at narrowing down career fields to look into.

Official versions of the test have to be given by a counselor, and you pay to take them, but unofficially you can read some of the MBTI books and get a good idea of what you prefer.

Here's a site that I really like for an intro to MBTI:  http://www.personalitypathways.com/MBTI_intro.html

You can always read the wikipedia entry on it (rather dry).

When you have time for some fun, there's a really neat site that looked at MBTI type and outdoor activity preferences here:  http://www.superiortrails.com/research-report.html.  I was fascinated to learn that others in my type category have (like me) a strong preference for canoe over kayak. big grin

I love My Inner World! (http://www.myinnerworld.com) Thanks for suggesting that site. I love the Wishing Well and Flower bed features. It's such a cute site, but also really empowering for women, and whoever feels the need to de-stress from life.
