Greetings everyone,

With the new year coming up quickly on our heals... I mentioned in another thread that I will be reading The Total Money Make Over by Dave Ramsey Beginning January 1 2008. I was wondering if anyone else was intrested in joining in. I know that Barnes and Nobel has it listed at less than 18 with S&H, and Amazon has it listed at less than 20 with S&H just to name a few sources that have it which could deliver in a couple of days. There is also many local libaries etc.  I would love to read this as a group if anyone else is intrested smile

If anyone wants to buy it through amazon, here is a link:

The Total Money Makeover

My library system doesn't have it. Sad  I may buy myself a copy, but...I'm not actually in debt (aside from the mortgage).  Still, I'd love to participate.  book blah blah blah

We are not in debt .. well not anymore.. before Michael and I got married he was in debt... and I Helped get him to a place where he actually had savings.. truth be told.. We are carring Christmas debt :S...

I think everyone can benifit from having more information about money and how it works for you or against you.

Here is what I suggest the reading schedual be ...

Week 1 (Jan 14-20): Chapters 1 & 2
Week 2 (Jan 21-27): Chapters 3 & 4
Week 3 (Jan 28 - Feb 3): Chapters 5 & 6
Week 4 (Feb 4-10): Chapters 7 & 8 & 9
Week 5 (Feb 11-17): Chapters 10 & 11
Week 6 (Feb 18-24): Chapters 12 & 13

6 week is all it will take to read the entire book smile as a group... the book itself isnt that thick.. come on everyone.. lets be finacially fit divas smile

Sure!  It can only help, right?   diva  I AM in debt - more than I'd like to admit, and I am determined to make a big reduction in it during 2008.  So the timing is perfect.

For me, I just can't justify buying a new hardcover book that I don't think I need. Sad  If I could have gotten a copy from the library I'd be right here with you talking.  But honestly, I have no debt aside from 15 years left on a mortgage, and we save over 20% of our income already.  We give generously and do the things we want to do.  So I guess I feel like we're doing alright.  I love talking about finances, so if a conversation gets going here I'll happily join in! smile

I feel similarly. I was going to buy the book yesterday but couldn't remember the name LOL.

I just have student loan debt right now and then we will have our mortgage.  I have close to $6K in a personal loan that I consolidated a bunch of stuff, but honestly I am planning to pay that off in one lump sum since we have the $$$ in savings. I just have to wait until we move into the new house, since the mortgage company looks at the $$$$ we have in savings.

I love the topic of personal finance and savings though, so keep it going. Any tips anyone can share are appreciated!!

I'm sure the answer to this is NO!  Wink  My copy came, but I haven't started it yet.  I can't wait!!  I have debt, but I also know better.  I know a lot of the theories, etc, but don't effectively put them into practice.  This is my year, though!  Financially great in '08!

What are the opening chapters (1 and 2) about in this book?  Anyone want to summarize the main ideas or key points?

Isn't he the guy who focuses on just keeping $1K for an emergency fund, selling off the things you don't need (ie. second car) and just paying down all your debt completely?

I just finished the intro, chapter 1 and chapter 2.  It's all about facing the reality of your situation; owning your own decisions (it is your own fault); and being willing to do the hard stuff it's going to take to become debt free.  His focus is that if you are willing to make the difficult sacrifices now, you can live better in the future.  He says, "If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else."  He also says "winning at money is 80% behavior and 20% head knowledge."  He is candid about the fact that he's not telling you anything you haven't already heard; but he's going to tell you HOW to do it not just what to do.

So far I am all aboard and scared to death.  Looking at myself in the mirror and owning all of my bad financial decisions - wow.  That's some serious life stuff!  But the thought of not having financial uncertainty looming over me is so exciting.
