In May some people moved away leaving behind thier very sweet, very pregnant, cat. Being the insane cat lady that I am I took her in. a few weeks later she gave birth to 4 kittens in my Sun-porch.

So, I took to fostering her and her babies for the summer. I found  homes for 2 of them right away. We figured it would be harder to place the Mom than the kittens, and decided we would keep her and adopt out the kittens.

Well, finding homes for the kittens turned to be much harder than we thought. We still have 2 of them.

Last month I had an appointment to get the Mom fixed, but she had run off, so I had to cancel. By the time I was able to get her back in, she was pregnant again.

So, now the Vet is doing a very risky surgery, spaying a very pregnant cat. She will be there for 2 days so that they can make sure she is ok. I feel really bad about it, but, I know that I cannot find homes for anymore kittens, and once she is fixed, she will have a stable home with us.

it's great that you are adopting her. Given the situation, I think the operation was the right thing to do, even if she is pregnant. I hope everything turns out ok!  hug

The surgury went well! She had to stay for 2 days, and I was able to bring her home today. It must have been a large litter, because she weighed a full pound and a half less afterwards. She is sore and a little freaked out, but I am keeping an eye on her.  I have to take her back in 10 days to have the sutures removed. It turned out she also had ear mites, and they were able to treat that as well.

We now have 3 cats and a dog - 5 cats, a dog, and 2 kids, is more than I can reasonably handle! So, now, I am back to desperatly searching for homes for the 2 kittens. I filled out the application for the only "No Kill" shelter in the area, but there is a long waiting list.

I realize now I wasn't 100% clear on what was bring done here, until now (call me dense).  What a very difficult decision you had to go through. Sad  I'm glad the mother is alright.

I am at my wits end with these cats!

The poor mother went through quite a trauma. Apparently, her body thinks she had kittens, and she started lactating. The next thing I knew, these 3 month old kittens were nursing again!  hammer

I have to keep them seperated from her while she heals, and hopefully stops lactating. I cannot let them outside because the annoying neighborhood kids stalk them, so I have them locked in our downstairs bathroom. It is horrible! She sits on one side of the door crying, and they are on the other side crying! The crying has kept me and DH awake for nights on end now! I hate to do that to them, but they are way too old to be nursing, and I am afraid they will tear out her stitches.

I still have not heard back from the No-Kill shelter and I don't know what to do with these kittens!

I called the no kill shelter yesterday and said I had a qauestion about an application that I had submitted. That got me past the voicemail heel and through to the woman in charge of admissions!

I explained the whole story to her and told her how hard it has been to keep the kittens away from the mama. She was very receptive!

She said there was usually a 3-4 month waiting period, but in this case, she felt she should make an exception. She moved my application to the top of the pile, and told me to call back on Friday. She said due to the long waiting period, there are usually a few no shows, and that if ther are 2 this week, they would take them this weekend!

Wish them luck!

Let us know what happens!  That poor mama kitty - she's really had a tough time of it lately.  I'm picturing 3-month-old kittens trying to nurse!  Yikes!!  shocked rotf
