I just picked up a copy of Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert.  Has anyone else here read it or heard of it?  A good friend of mine thought I would love it, so I finally got myself a copy of it.   I've barely started reading it but am enjoying it so far.

Quote
At the age of thirty-one, Gilbert moved with her husband to the suburbs of New York and began trying to get pregnant, only to realize that she wanted neither a child nor a husband. Three years later, after a protracted divorce, she embarked on a yearlong trip of recovery, with three main stops: Rome, for pleasure (mostly gustatory, with a special emphasis on gelato); an ashram outside of Mumbai, for spiritual searching; and Bali, for "balancing." These destinations are all on the beaten track, but Gilbert's exuberance and her self-deprecating humor enliven the proceedings: recalling the first time she attempted to speak directly to God, she says, "It was all I could do to stop myself from saying, 'I've always been a big fan of your work.'"

I love the excerpt!  It sounds great!  I haven't heard of it before.

I'm about a third of the way through it and like it very much so far.  I can't help thinking sometimes, though, "Must be nice to be paid to go travel for a year and pretty much do whatever you want."  She finances her trip with an advance from a publisher for the book she'd ultimately write about her travels.

Still, inner cynic aside, I like what she has to say.

I finished this book and overall, I enjoyed it.  I found my attention waning a bit towards the end of the book, when she was in Bali, and found myself riveted by her stay in the ashram in India.  The sheer number of hours she spent meditating was amazing, and the breakthroughs she seemed to make were incredible.  Her writing style is dry, funny and personable, and the book is a captivating tale.  It begs the questions, for me, "What would I do for a year, if i could do anything?  What drives me?  What questions would I want to answer?  What would I pursue?"

A comment in my blog reminded me of something else from the book that is thought-provoking:  what is your word?  She talks about cities having words; New York's is "achieve" and Rome's is "sex".  So what would your word be?

I'm ashamed to admit that the first word that come to mind for me is "worry".  Sad  I need a new word!

queen How about 'perfect' and 'brilliant' and 'talented'?  Those are words I would associate with you Jen.

This made me think of Ally McBeal and her theme song.   bouncing lol  Same idea.  I used to think about what my theme song would be to go with how I was feeling, etc.  I think at this point my theme song would be, "I Want a New Drug."  Mostly because numbing out with food is how I coped, and now I have to find a new way.  Some days I just want to numb out because it's familiar.

Anyway, I don't know how to turn that into a word that I'm willing to label myself with!   eek

I liked the review on the book.  I love books that make me think of other things besides, work - love - happily-ever-after.

I really like the idea of having a word.  I'm with you Jen, my first thought is that my word would be 'confused'.  I'll need to change that too.  smile
