We\'ve talked off and on about getting one for DD.

Pros: more floor space, better use of space in general in smallish room

Cons: hard to get in bed and snuggle, read, tuck in at night or whenever  heart

Any opinions - anyone else have one, had one?

I did that for a short time.  It\'s a great idea, but the things to look out for are:

1) if you get tired of going up & down the ladder (not much chance of that at Grace\'s age!)

2) if the ceiling is too close to the top of the bed so you can\'t sit up in bed

3) need to have either a night-light or some way of turning on the light from the bed in case you need to get up & use the restroom

Let us know how it goes!   asleep

All I can say is blugh.

Many of the beds in my school\'s dorms are lofted and I really don\'t like it. Sure there\'s more space for storage, but the height really does stink. Sometimes when you want to just roll out of bed, you half roll/ half fall out of bed or you have to concentrate on climbing down when you\'re more asleep than awake. The loft beds where you can actually put desks under can make you feel a little claustrophobic, too.

I definitely wouldn\'t suggest it. The last one I had, was one where you can just adjust the height to put boxes or trunks under. I don\'t remember if you said how old your daughter is, but if she\'s pretty young or short and you consider those kind, it\'s going to present a problem. I can tell you, falling out of them is absolutely horrible. Maybe you could get one of those beds that have drawers under them (I think they\'re called trundles?) or invest in some great shelving and storage options. Maybe a great closet organizer.

Well, I hope that helps!

Take care!

I had a loft bed for a while, that my brother made for me. THe trick to me was getting a stepping-stool thing to put right beside the top part of the bed. It was really good to have the extra space for storage. I set up my crafting room under there.
The cats loved it, too, but if it\'s too high I guess it could be a health hazard.

It reminded me of my roommate in school - we both had loft beds and she fell out while trying to get down in the middle of the night and has had severe back problems every since.

But on the other hand there are a lot of alternatives that kids would enjoy - I\'ve seen slides instead of stairs...

I found a low loft that is only 44" high, with 29"' of clearance underneath.  It's unfinished and will only be about $200, so I'm going to order one today from a store here in town.  We're going to sand and primer DD's bookcase and shelves and then paint everything, including her bed, a lavender color that matches one of the purples in her quilt that my mom made for her.  Should be pretty.  smile

Thanks for everyone's feedback!
