I know I have complained here before about the annoying over population of Deer here, but now it has gone to a whole new level, which could really effect our health.

In the past 2 weeks we have found 7 Deer ticks! 3 on our Dog, 1 on each DS, and 2 on the floor inside our house. I am totally freaked out! They are so disgusting and can carry a variety of harmful diseases.

We have lived here for 10 years, and before this Spring I had Never even seen a tick here. Now it's like a plague.

I have treated all of  the animals, and sprayed the whole house with a spray that is supposed to kill them, but have since found 2 inside the house.

Every night there are Deer in our yard. The boys are always outside when it is nice out, so I'm sure thats how they find their way inside. I can't exactly have them wear tick collars, apply Advantix to them as I do the animals!

Years ago I was a Nanny for a girl who had Lymes Disease, and remember how devastating it was.

Has anyone ever dealt with Deer Ticks before, or know of anything people can safely apply to deter them?

Unfortunately, I don't know of anything "safe" you can apply.  I will tell you that my husband sprays the area my children play in with Sevin (I think I am spelling that correctly).  I am sure it is highly toxic for the environment (which just kills me as I don't use anything but biodegradable cleaners in the house!) but (knock on wood) we have not had ticks in the yard.  Also, I use the monthly application that goes on the dog's backs.  We do this year round just to be sure.  I hope that helps a bit!

Thank you for your reply. I went to the hardware store, and Sevin was what they suggested. too. DH borrowed our neighbor's spreader, and applied it to our lawn in the evening, and then watered it as suggested. It was a pain because we could not let the kids or pets out there until the next day, but we have not found any Ticks since.

Now I am just keeping my fingers crossed that we will have no future issues with Ticks!

We haven't had problems with ticks but fleas seem worse this year. :(  Not sure why...

Your observations are correct! Ticks and tick borne infections are sharply on the rise.

Birds have been helping too, by spreading infected deer ticks all over the nation.

I am NOT an outdoors type, so imagine my shock when I realized I'd driven 350 miles with a deer tick in each ankle after a short period outdoors!

I took a close up pic and then blogged everything I'd learned on www.tickedoffliterally.blogspot.com because I could hardly believe how much I DIDN"T KNOW about ticks/lyme disease/health insurance if you DO get sick, and what to expect from a doctor if you go in and say you're concerned after having multiple ticks removed.

By the way, You WON'T feel them walking on you, or biting (numbing agents in their mouths).

Please all, use permethrin (in camping stores) and extreme caution and stay safe this summer.  How I wish I'd understood all this before.

P.S. the very scientists that made the current (short term, weak and cheap) approaches to treatment wrote the very opposite in earlier medical journals. It was only after they got involved financially in health insurance profits that the very same scientists changed their tune.  It's on signature 179 by Joy R. Walker...on the  "Lyme Fraud Against Humanity Petition".

In summary, prevention is your best bet for more reasons than most of us realize.

we spent a lot of time in West Virginia and the ticks out there are awful.  We would have nightly tick checks of the kids and wouldn't let pets in the house until they'd been de-ticked. 
We also never hiked without socks or longer pants and wore a brand of tick repellent that WASN'T highly laced with chemicals and still seemed to the do the trick.

My family likes to make fun of me because I once had a tick on the middle of my forehead and as my grandmother was getting the tweezers I completed passed out.

and Jen, I agree with you on the fleas this year - they're bad here too.
