Title: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on March 26, 2008, 09:38:00 AM So far, DH and I have done all of our recent home improvements on our own, but new countertops is something we're hiring out for, along with some plumbing repair work and the installation of a new cooktop and sink. Today, the demo begins on the counters. It's going to be loud and dusty!
Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: JennR on March 26, 2008, 04:00:10 PM Good luck! I know from experience that living through a kitchen remodel can be interesting! I hope they can get it done quickly for you, and not make too huge of a mess.
BTW - what did you ever decide about the sink? Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on March 26, 2008, 09:18:47 PM Today went well. All of the old tile is off; next step is to replace the wood to prepare for the new surface. Our contractor so far has been very nice and left things pretty clean, too.
We ended up with a stainless steel sink, and I really hope we like it. We also got a black, glass-top electric cooktop to replace our old cooktop, and I'm looking forward to having that. Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: allinyc on March 27, 2008, 05:04:51 PM Our master bedroom in our new house is demo'ed right now.
My husband does similar work for a living, and his thing is making sure that they do a really thorough clean-up for the customers each day. Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on April 01, 2008, 01:22:14 PM The subcontractor came today to measure for the new countertops! We're using a cool product called Richlite (http://www.richlite.com/countertop/) - somewhat eco-friendly. :)
Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Lara on April 02, 2008, 07:42:33 AM I bet it's going to look awesome!!
Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on April 03, 2008, 08:01:48 AM I think it's going to look sooooo much better in there. I've disliked our counters since the day we bought the house (eleven years ago now ) and am really looking forward to having something that appeals. We're going to have an undermounted sink, so cleaning up the counters and sink area will be much easier now, and no more tile!
Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on April 04, 2008, 08:53:21 AM Our new cooktop is temporarily installed and it is going to be so nice! Easy to clean, heats up quickly and looks sharp. Very cool! Maybe it will inspire me to cook more. :rotf: DD would love to do more cooking...
Now we have to wait ten days to three weeks for the countertop material to arrive. Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on May 07, 2008, 09:37:12 AM Countertop installation has begun. It ought to be done by tomorrow afternoon - woo hoo! Maybe I can grab a picture to post - before and after would be neat to see. :yipee:
Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: JennR on May 07, 2008, 05:03:39 PM Congrats on the progress! You should definitely take some before and after pictures. When I was digging out photos for my Grandfathers slideshow I found pictures of the boys in the kitchen before we remodeled - it was really cool to compare them to what it looks like now. Since it has been a few years, I forget how much work we did!
How are you handling living through the process? I remember thinking I was going to go nuts if I had to cook one more meal on a portable cooktop in the dining room! At least you are not doing your floor - that is a real pain! We had our refrigerator in our living room, and our oven in the dining room for 3 weeks while DH and his friend tiled & grouted our kitchen, hallway and entryway! Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: HeatherH on May 08, 2008, 08:14:08 AM Yeah! Picture, please.
Title: Re: let the destruction begin! Post by: Jen on May 10, 2008, 08:37:24 AM It looks like we may need a new faucet, but other wise we're all set aside from painting the lower cabinets. :dude:
