Title: Selling books on half.com
Post by: Jen on January 12, 2008, 12:11:40 PM
It's been a long time since I used half.com to sell anything, but today I listed nine books from books DH and I have purged out of our shelves.  The total is at about $67, so it would be great if they all sold!

Your timing for this post is perfect!  My DS cleaned out his room yesterday and I've got all of these books to deal with.  I'll try and do the half.com thing and see how it goes!  :diva:

I listed a handful of books on half.com yesterday!  :yipee:  I've been talking about learning to sell stuff on eBay for years now, but yesterday I took the plunge.  I'm going to list some more books today, and start to photograph the stuff I'm going to list on eBay.   :dude:

I have been talking about ebay as well.. I buy from it.. but have never sold anything.. Is it hard???

Yea Heather! I hope you sell some books!  I sold another one this week, which makes three now.

Brooke - selling on ebay isn't hard, but I think at first it might seem a little daunting.  I would suggest finding other listings for the same or similar items that you are trying to sell to see how others write up their listings.  Pictures are really a must, in my opinion.  If people can't see it they usually won't bid on it.

When I was in College, I used to sell all of the text-books I didn't keep on Half.com, I always got at least twice what the school bookstore would give me! I also bought my text-books there when possible - usually for less than 1/2 of what the school bookstore sold the used ones for.

I have sold books on both, E-bay & Half.com and I always get more $ for them on Half.com vs. Ebay.

I actually bought 20 soft-cover novels on E-bay, 2 weeks ago, for $15!

Question for you half.com sellers:  do you go with their recommended price, or do you set one lower?  I've got 25 books up there now and haven't sold any yet.     I don't know if it's my selection, lack of selling experience and therefore rating, or ??  Any tips?

I usually round off to the nearest 50 cents and try to be one of the lowest two or three listed, if not the lowest.  Since I'm doing this to clear out clutter and not to run a business, I can afford to low-ball other sellers.

That's pretty much what I do too, unless it is a really sought after textbook or something that I know will eventually sell for a good price. You can check and see previous sales of the same item, which is also helpful in determining your price.

Thanks for the advice!  I lowered my prices and added more books, and I sold 2!!  YIPEE!!!!!  It's not much money, but it sure feels good!!   :yipee:  Every dollar counts.

Thats Great! I really need to follow your example - my books are taking over my house! I need to go through all of them and sell off the excess!

:dude:  Way to go Heather!   :D

and...

When I was in College, I used to sell all of the text-books I didn't keep on Half.com...

:rotf: Off topic, but when I was in college the internet was in its infancy - can't believe how much things have changed in the last 20 years.

I've sold 5 books for a net profit of $16.  I've got 26 more listed; some textbooks.  So far Harry Potter fetched the best price.  :D

I'm up to 10 sales for a net profit of $24.64.  The post office is on the way home, so it takes very little effort on my part.  I know the profit is little, but it's better than zero dollars.  :D

Like you said, it IS profit!  And, you're clearing out clutter an giving items a second life, which is good too.

It may help create a subtle shift in your mindset too, as you explore ways to bring in more money while trying to spend less money. :thumb:

I used to do a lot of business on eBay but Ive never heard of half.com.  I will have to check into it.  My SO and I have a TON of books for varying businesses and whatnot that we were interested in and all they do is take up space now!

just out of curiousity, what kind of books are you selling HeatherH?  I have a lot of chic lit, probably over 100 books that I have already reread too many times to count and its probably time to get rid of them.

I've sold chick lit, textbooks, kids books, Dr. Phil books (don't ask....it was a gift from my mother.....).  All kinds!  Harry Potter still fetched the biggest price.

I sell books on half.com also.....use to do it Amazon.com but after about 1 negative rating they actually starting threating to shut my account down so after a few emails, I just decided to stick with half.com. I've sold about 2 in the beginning of the semester and hopefully more soon.

selling on ebay and half is a great way to make some extra moolah and clean out the closets.

I try to keep an area in the basement where I store things I want to sell than I pick seasonal times to go at it... and just spend a whole week on that project.

Good Luck and Smart Savings!!

2 books sold already for about $15 profit!  :D

Make that three books!  I've netted about $23.  Not making me rich, but it's better than nothing. ;)

A little money is better than no money, for sure!   :D  Plus, like you said earlier, it's kinda recycling, too.

I have only sold one other book, but I'll leave them listed for another month or so.  After that, I may just take them down to friends of the library or something.

I've done this too! I sold on Amazon. Amazon isnt the best though, they charge a specific amount for shipping but sometimes they dont charge enough so I get stuck paying to ship!!!  :hammer:

I recently took most of my listings down.  I decided to leave up just those books that make it worth my time to make the run to the post office, etc.

That's what I did, too.  I have some other ones to post, but if they don't sell within 6 weeks they're getting donated.  :)  Either way, they'll have a new home.
