Title: Money vs. Health Post by: summer_sakura on August 01, 2007, 11:21:05 AM I can't help but feel daunted by the recent statistics I found out about on savvymiss.com's latest article:
Executives expected to take 50% fewer vacation days in 2003 than they did the previous year Americans are taking 10% less vacation time this year than they did last year Nearly 50% of full-time workers say they are too busy to take vacations Approximately 40% of those surveyed said they canceled or postponed vacation plans because of work How are people so involved in their jobs that they're willing to sacrifice their health and well-being? Anyway, after the bad stats, it also talks about what we can do for ourselves to be satisfied with our jobs and be fulfilled. I highly recommend it: http://www.savvymiss.com/career-woman/career-advice/9-to-5-grind-archive/article/take-a-break-238/page-browse/1.html Title: Re: Money vs. Health Post by: Soap Star on August 01, 2007, 05:35:26 PM  I like the idea of taking shorter more frequent vacations.

Title: Re: Money vs. Health Post by: barbara_stanny on September 05, 2007, 12:21:09 PM People really believe working longer hours is the secret to making more money. That simply not true. I've written a number of books the subject and I found no one works harder or longer than underearners.

Title: Re: Money vs. Health Post by: Gayle on October 23, 2007, 10:56:15 AM Barbara, correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm going to bet that most of those "underearners" are women racing through their days on treadmills that are spinning faster and faster.
There's a way off this vicious cycle, but it can't be found using the same thinking that got us on it. I lead retreats for women who want to reclaim their lives and I can tell you that the toughest hurdle is usually not overcoming the real "have-to's" filling our days, but the imaginary "shoulds" and "can'ts" filling our minds. Would love to chat with you sometime! I like to try to take at least one day during the work week where I see clients in the field in the morning, and then work "from home" in the afternoon. I don't have access to my company email and I find people can't track me down and stress me out as much that way.
Only people who need to get me for a real emergency have access to my cell phone. Also related to this, I find I am tied to my job (that I may lose but that's another thread!) because of the healthcare benefits. My husband has his own business and hasn't been able to afford healthcare for years. I also find it disgusting that I am a healthcare professional and cannot afford healthcare coverage!!
